UBS00103 MERCERDES 917 DAKAR TRUCK

It was bought back in February 2005 by three ex bikers who wanted an midlife “Adventure” and they decided that they wanted to build a small race truck in which the three of them would compete in the race class of the Dakar. Halfway through building the truck they realised that to race a truck in Dakar it had to be Homologated by its original manufacture. It then turned out that the truck they had bought to convert was not, so they eventually dropped down a class to the service class which did not have to be homologated. They spent in the region of 60 to 70 K buying and converting it to what was almost race spec which was way over the top for a service truck. They did the rally in 2006 in the service class and I then bought it with a colleague and we used it again in 2007.

It stood idle for a couple of years until we gave it a refit last year to the cost of 12K in readiness for this years Dakar in south America. Before it was shipped out there to Argentina for the start it had;

4 new tyres.

3 new race seats

all shocks stripped, serviced and rebuilt by Milner Off Road

all new brake linings and hub seals etc

New Turbo

New storage racking

200 litre external water tank on roof

additional side R/H opening to allow access from both sides

general refit and full service

 

The base truck started out life as a “Airport Fire tender” and is based upon a 917 Mercedes 4 x 4 with hi + low ratio with centre box and rear diff lock. Because it is still registered as a Fire Engine there is no tax or MOT due each year which is a bonus! It has two speedo’s depending if you want to use it with or without a Tacho so we estimate the overall mileage to be in the region of 60 to 70,000 at very most which again is nothing for that base vehicle. Engine is sweet and is 5958cc diesel and has two big tanks fitted to give a range of over 1700 km.
